"He must increase; I must decrease" - John 3:30

The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
This Tuesday, June 24, the Church celebrates the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, one of only a few saints whose birthday is celebrated on the liturgical calendar.
John the Baptist had a special mission from God: to prepare people for the coming of Jesus. He spent his life pointing others toward Christ and reminding them to open their hearts to God.
For families with young children, Saint John reminds us that we don't have to do big things to share our faith. Sometimes we prepare the way for Jesus through small acts of kindness, prayer, and love.
For children, you might simply say:
"Saint John helped people get ready for Jesus."
Virtue to Notice: Humility
Humility means remembering that everything good comes from God. Saint John the Baptist was humble because he knew his role was not to bring attention to himself, but to help others know and love Jesus.
He famously said:
"He must increase; I must decrease."
— John 3:30
Even preschoolers can begin to practice humility by helping others, taking turns, and remembering that loving Jesus is more important than being first or getting attention.
Simple Faith Practice for Preschoolers:
This week, talk about the special gifts God has given each member of your family.
Ask:
- What are you good at?
- How can you use that gift to help others?
- How can we use our gifts to love Jesus?
Remind your child:
"God made you special, and He has a purpose for you."
